about

Raw Believer had Suicide’s drum machine. Suicide the band. Julia had been doing front of house sound for them on a short tour and she was keeping the machine safe at home for a few days off. I had just been to visit my mother. She was running a bed and breakfast in the refurbished ruin of a cloister at the foot of a volcano in Antigua, Guatemala. I’d gone down with my brother, and the trip had been a surreal and somewhat debauched affair. I kept notes and upon return set to writing lyrics in the form of a “concept” album about the trip. The through line was my mother and her larger than life presence in my mind. Julia and Barbara had a place in the woods, and we met up there for a weekend. The drum machine had ten settings and I had the lyrics for ten songs. Sometimes limitations can set you free. We found the songs with ease like they were buried in the sand at our feet. The beats told us what to do. And the drums and the guitars and whatever voice I could find for singing. Guatemala is a deep and spooky place. My mother, La Doña, was a fearless and memorable woman. A local friend helped us get some of her ashes up to the top of the active volcano where they were flung over the edge into the roiling cauldron of lava. That’s what she wanted. That gesture, and a record of songs, felt like the least I could do. As a trio in full flight, we were able to listen to each other and run with the beautiful ghost of this record. It was made over the course of a single weekend. And many many lifetimes.

about

Raw Believer New York, New York

RAW BELIEVER came to life in 2004. The first recordings were made at a small apartment in Brooklyn. Barbara Gogan and Julia Brightly combined forces with Robert O. Leaver otherwise known as Robbie Leaver. Leaver, the front man, tricked them into naming the band after himself. Raw Believer felt right. The three members had all been rubbed a little raw over time. But they still believed! ... more
